I think we live at a point of extreme darkness and extreme brightness. Extreme darkness, because we really do not know from which direction the light would come. extreme brightness, because we ought to have the courage to begin anew.

From the beginning, Bidoun has served as a platform — for new questions, images, and ideas about the Middle East. Bidoun’s activities fall in three primary areas: publishing, educational, and curatorial. To date, our projects have included a range of pursuits: curatorial initiatives, educational programs, artist commissions, talks, tours, performances, books, an itinerant library, and an online archive of avant-garde media".

Decolonizing Architecture

DAAR’s work combines discourse, spatial intervention, education, collective learning, public meetings and legal challenges.

Palestine Poster Project
"This website has been created to mark headway on my master's thesis project at Georgetown University. It is a work-in-progress.
I first began collecting Palestine posters when I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco in the mid-1970s. By 1980 I had acquired about 300 Palestine posters. A small grant awarded with the support of the late Dr. Edward Said allowed me to organize them into an educational slideshow to further the "third goal" of the Peace Corps: to promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. Over the ensuing years, while running my design company, Liberation Graphics, the number of internationally published Palestine posters I acquired steadily grew. Today the archives include some 3,000 Palestine posters from myriad sources making it what many library science specialists say is the largest such archives in the world".

Oecumene. Citizenship alter Orientalism.
Oecumene: Citizenship after Orientalism explores how the concept of citizenship is being refigured and renewed around the globe. At a time when tumultuous world events, from Israel to India, call for a deeper understanding of the purpose and power of citizenship, the project opens up the boundaries of citizenship by exploring political subjectivities outside of Europe. The project focuses on the tension between two different institutions: citizenship, the process by which political subjectivity is recognised and enacted, and orientalism, the process by which Europe is considered the birthplace of ‘universal ideas’ such as democracy, secularism, rights, and capitalism. What connects citizenship to orientalism? Historically, citizenship has been seen as an exclusively European institution contrasted against non-European societies. Yet, ‘citizenship’ as an expression of our social and political belonging has become ‘unbound’. People across the globe are inventing new ways to claim their democratic rights as citizens.

Tasneem Project
Everything you own, everything you see, hear, smell, touch, taste must conform to the cold currency of consumerism. Slowly, but surely, all of reality is becoming a product, and every human relationship is being reduced to that of producer and consumer. That which refuses to be ingested by the consumeritic maw is either mad or bad. Welcome to one of the few remaining discourses of resistance: Muslim Anarchism. Beyond brand, beyond edutainment, the Tasneem Project is my narrative of resistance.
